Being associated with a high profile English club has a lot of advantages for local based Southern Cross University FC. With it however, comes the responsibility of constantly improving and never stopping at a certain level.
The expectation for Southern Cross is clear and concise. The club have a vision that they stick to and have given the game in the local Northern Rivers area a much needed boost.
Existing for only 18 months, the club is still in the early development stages of a proper foundation. With only three age groups on offer in their first season, the club is looking to expand its focus and skill development into different age groups and regions.
With the idea of growth and offering the high quality service to a wider area, the local community and the children are the biggest beneficiaries of this.
The simple growths in numbers have been staggering to say the least.
In the initial stages of the local High Performance program, the club had only two coaches and sixty players. However now, that number sits at twenty-five coaches and one hundred and fifty players in the program as well as a further ninety in skill development.
It is something that club president Scott Collis says is a major boost for the area.
“The program has completely changed the landscape in the area. The challenge now is putting substance behind the initial excitement and building on that initial foundation.”
In the program itself, the attention to detail ensures that the children are well prepared to grow within themselves as people first and foremost and then as athletes.
This part of the program has come with great support from Southern Cross University.
“The University has focused on educating players and parents in strength and conditioning, injury management, nutrition and psychology tips,” said Collis.
Southern Cross University FC have come in at a time when the area was in need of a high performance program and offered one of the premier services around the area.
With the club in a good position to continue growing the way it has, only time will tell exactly how big and how successful the end outcome is.
