The local WNPL derby between Gold Coast United and Mudgeeraba SC will be more than just a local derby. The clubs will be competing to be crowned the champions of the inaugural Faye Rodd Cup.
Faye Rodd has been an ambassador for women’s football on the Gold Coast for over 25 years. Her role as women’s director at Palm Beach as well as sitting on the board of Football Gold Coast add to her impressive resume as Vice-Chair of Football Queensland’s Womens standing committee and Football Gold Coast life membership. It is something that she holds with great pride.
“I’ve seen so many great young girls go through the ranks. There are plenty of Palm Beach girls out there playing in the NPL and it has been an enjoyable exercise,” said Rodd.
With Female Football Week at the focus as well as International Women’s Day, there could have been no better time for a cup like this to be introduced for the local derby.
“I think this has been perfect timing considering what time of year it is. I am so proud and humble to have my name on the cup and to be involved in women’s soccer here on the Coast,” said Rodd.
Both United captain Neesa Doyle and Mudgeeraba captain Ailie Rennie couldn’t be any more ready for the game as they prepared for the first local derby of the season.
Football Gold Coast General Manager Damien Bresic said the time was right for Faye’s efforts to be recognised on the big stage.
“Faye has been a driving force in our local football community for women’s football for many years now. I can only sing praises for the initiative and hope to see as many people down supporting on Saturday.”
It is safe to say that the love Faye has for the women’s game has been her driving force for so many years.
The game between Gold Coast United and Mudgeeraba will be played this Saturday (10th of March) at Robina Raptors, with kick off scheduled for 5pm.
