This week our Volunteer of the Week from Ormeau Football club is Mel Voight! Find out more about Mel below!
Name: Mel Voight
Role: Manager/Wrangler U18’s, Safety Oficer, Committee Member and General All-Rounder
I manage my son’s team, and have done for the past three year. I have enjoyed managing and overcoming the challenges that managers face. This year it is more like “wrangling” than managing, as the boys come of age, get jobs, licenses and girlfriends. As safety officer I keep track of first aid kits/supplies, ensure ice is available and tend to any injuries on game days. My husband is the canteen convenor so on game days/nights you will find me behind the counter serving or cooking, wherever is necessary. I also help with line marking and clubhouse cleaning as well as a ground official when needed!
Years Volunteering: 4
Previous Clubs: None
Favourite Food: Ormeau FC’s Deluxe Breaky Burger- I highly recommend you try it next time you visit!
First Footballing Memory:
My first footballing memory was being a kid and watching my dad play Senior League in NSW. As an adult, I thought soccer was boring and was worried how I would go when my son asked to play… I no longer think it is boring! Some of my most passionate moments have been on the sideline cheering! I am constantly amazed by the skill and talent that are employed during the game and take my hat off to anyone who has made a career out of it.
I don’t have an idol but I look up to my husband. He gives so much of his time to our family and Ormeau FC while still holding down a job, putting up with me and keeping it all together!
A YouTube video was shared last year that I will never forget. There was a ittle kid form overseas who lived in an impoverished neighbourhood and a tourist happened to record him while he was playing with a football. This child was about 5 years old and I was amazed. He wasn’t famous, rich but you could see how happy he was kicking around his old ball, and the skill he showed was mind blowing.
Favourite Holiday Destination:
I love to holiday anywhere, but my most favourite place I have visited is Mystery Island in Vanuatu. Great snorkelling and the locals were beautiful people. I am very much looking forwar to a cruise booked for later in the year where we are going to Tonga and Fiji.
Goal for 2018:
My goal for 2018 is to make sure we get on that holiday and develop a business idea I have with my husband.
Congratulations Mel and keep up the great work!
